What is sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disorder characterized by the formation of granulomas—tiny clumps of inflammatory cells—in one or more organs of the body, including skin, lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, and eyes. This immune response forms too many clumps, which interferes with organ structure and function—and overall health and wellness.
What are the symptoms?
Severity and symptoms vary among patients with sarcoidosis. In some cases, the disorder goes away on its own, while others may experience life-long symptoms. Up to a third of cases require consistent treatment for the ongoing effects of the disorder.
Are there treatment options?
Options may include corticosteroids, immune system suppressant medication, and antimalarial drugs, which are most likely to be effective for those with skin symptoms or high levels of calcium in the blood. Learn more »
