When I was first diagnosed with hemophilia, I lived in a small town in Iowa. When the test results came back, my doctor scheduled an appointment for me at the closest Hemophilia Treatment Center. This gave me and my family peace of mind because the staff understood how to treat hemophilia and provided insight into adjusting to this new lifestyle.
Without HTCs, it’s uncommon for hospitals and clinics in remote areas to have clotting factor on hand—or even know the complexities of bleeding disorders. Having a specialist by my side was crucial, especially since we were just beginning to learn about my diagnosis.
Throughout my childhood, I relied on the HTC for education, nursing, ordering medication, and lifestyle support. As I grew older, I saw new and unique factor products hit the market. The HTC was able to explain the medications and help my family make the best decisions possible for my health.
The most important time in my life was when I had a head bleed. My mother immediately called my HTC and within minutes they sent an ambulance to pick me up. I was placed on a continuous drip of factor. I am alive today because I recovered under the HTC’s supervision.
I continue to visit my HTC annually for checkups. As new products are released, I’m able to ask the same questions my parents used to ask. My HTC is a huge part of my life, and I will always be a devoted patient.
